China Summer Program

This program is currently not accepting applications and will be paused through Fall 2023. If you would like to discuss your study abroad options, please contact the CWIL office at abroad@saintmarys.edu.

Saint Mary’s College, in collaboration with China Women's University (CWU) and the Soong Ching Ling Foundation, offers a two to three week study abroad program during the summer.  China has become one of the most popular study abroad destinations because of its fast economic development and exciting culture. Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the 5000-year history of this fascinating country while earning 3 hours of credit.

Transportation, Costs, and Financial Aid
The cost of Summer programs vary by the program. In general, you should expect to pay the standard SMC summer tuition rates, as well as an additional program fee specific to each program. Financial aid awards from Saint Mary's College will not apply to the summer session. The program fee estimate is $4,800, and covers the 3-credit summer tuition, international airfare, hotels, meals, transportation within China, museum and historical site entrance fees, and English tour guides.  In addition, students need to pay the $140 visa fee.

Participants from Saint Mary’s College are eligible for CWIL student travel grants and China Program Alumnae Scholarships through the Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership.

Course Information
A history course on Beijing and Shanghai: A Tale of Two Cities in the Past and Present (3 credits) will be offered for the 2020 China Summer Program. While traveling from Beijing to Shanghai, this course introduces local history and culture through films, novels and non-fiction writings from the past century. As two of the biggest cities in China, Beijing and Shanghai have their distinctive characters that allow for comparison and contrast – such as the political center vs. the business center, or the “imperial capital” vs. the “magical capital.” Between the two cities, we will also explore Qufu, the hometown of Confucius, Mount Tai, one of the five Sacred Mountains in China, and Zhouzhuang, a water town famous for its canals. Through exploring the history of these sites, this course emphasizes regional diversity within China, as well as connections between the past and the present.
