China is the largest country in East Asia and has a population of over 1.3 billion, making it the most populous country in the world. China has one of the world's oldest people and continuous civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than six millennia. The fast economic development in China in recent years and its open policy makes it more attractive to the world today.
In collaboration with Creighton University and the Soong Ling Ching Foundation, the China Program offers a three-week summer program in mid-May to early-June. Travel in China will commence in Beijing. For one week, American and Chinese university students will engage in a service project. Students will have a more cultural experience by staying in a modern hotel in a non-tourist neighborhood. Landmarks and sites that will be visited are the Forbidden City, Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace, National History Museum, and Ming Dynasty Tombs. For a spiritual experience, students will explore the Yugang Buddhist Caves and Buddhist Temples in the city Da Tong. Students will also visit Tianjing, Nanjing, Hangzhou, and Suzhou, and Yellow Mountain--possibly the most beautiful mountain in China. The last stop will be Shanghai, a city that has become an emerging tourist destination with its new reputation as a cosmopolitan center of culture and design.
Students will have the opportunity to take a three-credit course. The Program is offered every summer and is open to students of all majors and class years. Chinese language is not required.
