Program Description:

London LEB

This program is currently not accepting applications and will be paused through Fall 2023. If you would like to discuss your study abroad options, please contact the CWIL office at abroad@saintmarys.edu.

London, the capital and largest city in the United Kingdom with a population of +8.5 million, has a diverse range of peoples and cultures.  As a leading global city its strengths include prominence in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, and tourism industries.

Travel and Orientation
Students provide their own round-trip transportation to London and must arrive in time for the program orientation.  Once there, students immerse in the unique global culture of the city and the Bloomsbury neighborhood where they live.  Part of the London Borough of Camden in central London, Bloomsbury is notable for garden squares and numerous cultural, educational and health-care institutions such as the British Museum and London University.

Facilities
Students live in shared apartments or residence halls with kitchen facilities.  Student ID’s allow access to University of London facilities that foster student interaction.  Classes are held at Birkbeck, a constituent college of the University of London. Located near the Tube, students can easily use public transportation to travel to sites around the city.

Cost and Financial Aid
The cost of Summer programs vary by the program. In general, you should expect to pay the standard SMC summer tuition rates, as well as an additional program fee specific to each program. Financial aid awards from Saint Mary's College will not apply to the summer session. Students may be eligible for the CWIL summer study travel grant. The Humanistic Studies Department (HUST) offers a generous study abroad scholarship for HUST majors and minors which may be used for London LEB summer programs. Information on both the HUST and CWIL summer travel grant can be found HERE.

Insurance
Saint Mary’s College provides mandatory health insurance to all students abroad through HTH Worldwide insurance company www.hthstudents.com. Students on any Saint Mary’s study abroad program are automatically covered by this policy. The cost of this insurance is included in the program fee.

Curriculum
London Summer Session:  Sunday, May 15th – Saturday, June 11th (4 weeks)

Students from all majors including HUST take 6 semester hours comprised of a 3 credit Practicum Project and another course, or two three credit courses.  The Practicum is similar to an internship, but based around small-group engagement with staff and experts. The program fee include orientation, welcome party and farewell dinner, two excursions, one local and one to a UK destination such as Brighton, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, or Stonehenge.  Includes Zone 1 & 2 Tube and bus pass and on-site student services support.

Field School in Global Health Risk is held in Athens, Greece, and is available following the London summer program for students with junior or senior standing and majoring in Global Studies, Nursing, Political Science, Social Work, or any major with Pre-Med. See Professor Vihtelic for further details and pricing.

Expenses
Pricing includes tuition, housing for 4 weeks, and HTH insurance and other features as described above for each program. Expenses that are not covered include round-trip airfare to London, local transportation, personal travel, books and supplies, laundry, personal expenditures, meals and entertainment. A deposit of $500 is due upon acceptance to the program.

Eligibility
Students must have an overall GPA of 2.5/4.0 for all London LEB programs.  Application should first be made to Saint Mary’s College, with admission to the program finalized through a separate application process to London LEB Education.  It is important that participating students are positive representatives of Saint Mary's College while abroad. Therefore, a successful candidate is expected to have an exemplary disciplinary record, emotional maturity, and an openness to new experiences and other cultures.
