Korean Culture Summer Program
This program is currently not accepting applications and will be paused through Fall 2023. If you would like to discuss your study abroad options, please contact the CWIL office at abroad@saintmarys.edu.
This three-credit, four-week program at Seoul Women’s University is offered in July and helps students learn about various aspects of Korean culture. Students interact with Korean college students and international students from other countries while participating in lectures on Korean language, religion, culture, economy, politics, and history. The lectures will be given in English or interpreted into English.
All participants will be matched with a Korean student partner, with whom they will participate together in all programs. Through this close interchange, participants will experience a constant interaction of cultures. They will be sharing their living quarters at Bahrom Education Center - a 10-story building where the student residence and classrooms are located. A one-night-homestay is provided by the Korean students in the program.
Field trips to historical and cultural places allow students to see firsthand the beauty of Korea, thus enriching their classroom learning. Various field trips are scheduled for each week of the program. There will be field trips to Icheon pottery village, Korea Folk Village, Gyeongju, Gyeongbokgung Palace, National Museum of Korea, Han River Cruise, Demilitarized Zone, all of which are places related to the lectures. Students will have some hands-on cultural experiences during which they will dress like traditional Koreans, learn Korean manners, make their own Korean-style pottery, practice Taekwondo, play traditional instruments and make Korean food.
The program is open to students of all majors and class years every summer. Korean language is not required.
The cost of Summer programs vary by the program. In general, you should expect to pay the standard SMC summer tuition rates, as well as an additional program fee specific to each program. Financial aid awards from Saint Mary's College will not apply to the summer session.
