CAPA Internship in Shanghai

This program is currently not accepting applications and will be paused through Fall 2023. If you would like to discuss your study abroad options, please contact the CWIL office at abroad@saintmarys.edu.

China is the fastest-growing country and has become the second largest economy in the world. It has the largest population in the world and has unique history and culture. One out of every five people in the world speaks Mandarin Chinese. Learning Mandarin and understanding Chinese culture and economic development will help students succeed in the global economy.

Location
Situated on the estuary of Yangtze River, Shanghai is China’s largest city and the world’s eighth largest. It serves as the most influential financial, economic, international trade, cultural, science and technology center in East China. A perfect blend of modern and traditional cultures, western customs and Chinese traditions intertwine and form the city's culture, making the CAPA Internship program a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience life in the fastest growing city in the world. During your time in Shanghai you’ll live and study at the East China Normal University (ECNU), a world-renowned research university founded in 1951, that offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs.

Program of Study
Saint Mary’s College has an affiliation with CAPA, The Global Education Network, and offers semester programs at the CAPA center on the campus of the ECNU in Shanghai. CAPA has worked with institutions of higher education to build programs that meet their goals for learning abroad. It operates education centers in Global Cities and has developed distinct academic offerings, support frameworks, and oversight structures for its students and visiting faculty. Students attend classes taught by the CAPA faculty and local university professors designed for the CAPA students. The program is customized to the needs of American students, including community services and internships opportunities.

Credits/Transcript
All the students are required to take at least 12 credits for a semester. All the credits will be transferred directly to SMC. Students will receive an email from our CAPA Registrar asking to submit course preferences about 90 days before you depart. All classes will be held on the main, urban campus of ECNU.

Internship
CAPA works with hundreds of different internship sites throughout its global cities. Student’s internship placement will be decided based on student’s interests and the information that student provide in her application. Student could be interning at a large company or a small start-up. Student may be one member of a large team, or one of two or three people in an organization. Each experience is unique, and the skill acquired will be equally unique.

Housing
Students will live in the international student dorms at ECNU with other CAPA students. There is also an option to live with a Chinese student for an additional fee during the semester term.

Transportation, Cost, and Financial Aid
Students will get assistance in visa application and will make their own flight reservation to Shanghai. Students pay Saint Mary’s College tuition, room and board, and a study abroad fee. Most Saint Mary's financial aid and scholarships can be applied to their semester in China. Students will receive monthly stipends for their food in China. All the program costs are covered except airfare, visa, personal cost, and souvenirs. There are many other external federal scholarships and they also apply to study abroad programs in China, for example, Gilman Scholarship, Boren Awards, and Freeman-Asia Scholarship.
