Program Description:

San Juan, Puerto Rico

This program is currently not accepting applications. The software for study abroad is being updated. Applications will be accepted again starting January 15, 2023. If you have any questions, please contact the CWIL office at abroad@saintmarys.edu.

The city of San Juan is the largest capital in the Caribbean and the cultural heart of Puerto Rico. Immerse yourself in the unique culture of the island, stroll along the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, relax on over 300 Caribbean beaches, or explore the many natural wonders of this island, like the tropical rainforest right outside the city.

Saint Mary's College has an affiliation with Spanish Studies Abroad which oversees the Puerto Rico program. Students study at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazon in the heart of the city. The University of the Sacred Heart was founded in 1888 and is a Catholic, independent, co-educational and non-profit institution. The Universidad del Sagrado Corazon is based on the teachings and guidance in ecumenical mission of the Catholic Church, encourages and facilitates spiritual, moral, intellectual, social and physical integral development of their students.

The Puerto Rico Program offers three enrollment options: summer, semester, and academic year. Saint Mary's students typically enroll in spring semester of their sophomore year and pay Saint Mary's tuition, room, and board. The summer program comprises two three and a half week terms offering an intensive academic experience with a rich cultural comonent. Students can earn four credits per summer term.

The cost of Summer programs vary by the program. In general, you should expect to pay the standard SMC summer tuition rates, as well as an additional program fee specific to each program. Financial aid awards from Saint Mary's College will not apply to the summer session. Students may be eligible for the CWIL summer study travel grant. All students who plan to study abroad are required to pay a non-refundable deposit which will be applied to the overall study abroad balance when abroad. Deposit amounts for Summer programs vary by the program.

The summer program requires dual applications. The online application for summer term to Saint Mary's College is due March 1st, with decisions announced by March 15th. Accepted students should then complete the online application to our partner, Spanish Studies Abroad.
